ASVAB Q & A
-
Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery
-
It is a timed 3 1/2 hour test. The ASVAB is the most widely used multiple-aptitude test battery in the world. It is not just a test for students interested in the military. As an aptitude test, the ASVAB measures your academic strengths, weaknesses, and potential for future success.
-
If you are thinking about joining the military...
- Your scores in four critical areas -- Arithmetic Reasoning, Word Knowledge, Paragraph Comprehension, and Mathematics Knowledge -- count towards your Armed Forces Qualifying Test (AFQT) score. The AFQT score determines whether you're qualified to enlist in the U.S. military.
- Your scores in the other areas of the ASVAB will determine how qualified you are for certain military occupational specialties and Enlistment Bonuses. A high score will improve your chances of getting the specialty/job and signing bonus you want.
If you are not interested in the military...
- It provides an interest inventory that will match your academic abilities for a career. If you have a chosen major for college, this inventory should help verify if your interest matches that major.
- If you still do not have a clue as to what you want to do upon graduation, this inventory will help you identify areas that reflect where your interests lie.
-
The test measures your knowledge in nine areas:
- General Science - Life, earth, space and physical sciences
- Arithmetic Reasoning - Ability to solve basic math and word problems
- Word Knowledge - Ability to grasp the meaning of words through synonyms
- Paragraph Comprehension - Ability to understand written material
